Dealing with perfectionism

Written by Naja Shafiq

“If I can’t make it perfect, why make it at all.”

Perfection is a shield you made up thinking that it will protect you from judgement blame and shame. Perfectionism is not the way. It’s in the way. It’s a bad habit that will stun your growth and progress.

To get rid of the bad habit, you will need a new habit to break the pattern. It’s called the 70% rule. Simply, aim for 70%, not 100%. If you ask yourself whether you can do it to perfectly, the answer will always be no, so you’ll procrastinate.

But if you ask yourself whether you can do it to 70% of perfect, the answer will most likely be yes. So you should just start doing it. By aiming for 70%, it won’t feel as daunting to start. So you’ll less likely to put it off.

The world isn’t going to hate you for making something less than perfect.
